Delage D8-120 Aerosport Coupe : Pebble Beach Concours, August, 2006. This is a 1937 Delage D8 120 Aerosport Coupe that was in the 2006 Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance. It placed second in its class (1925-1939 European Closed) but I think it was one of the best-looking cars I have ever seen. This particular car is chassis 50789 and is part of RM's Arizona auction in January, 2009.

The 1937 D8-120 was built using a Delahaye engine and modified chassis. There were less than twenty Aerosport coupes built by the carrosseuir Letourner et Marchand and this car is thought to be the last surviving in the 'notchback' style. The coachwork is among the most celebrated of French designs.

This car was sold new in France but was brought to Australia after World War II. Unfortunately, while there it detoriated and suffered from several accidents. An American collector rescued the car and brought it back to the US for restoration. Happily, the restorers were able to use much of the original bodywork, chassis, and interior. The 115hp straight-8 engine and Cotal four-speed pre-selector transmission were rebuilt.

This is one of those cars that comes up for sale and everyone takes notice. Its provenance, engineering, and craftsmanship are all top-notch. It will certainly be a celebrated addition to someone's collection.

For the complete RM Auctions listing, click here: http://www.rmauctions.com/FeatureCars.cfm?SaleCode=AZ09&CarID=r121.

UPDATE: the car sold at RM's Arizona auction for $825,000

1949 Willys-Jeep CJ2A : The Willys-Jeep CJ2A and attached plow proved very versatile in 2003's big snowstorms. But wouldn't start for The Blizzard of 2005 and that left us shoveling the 6-foot snowbanks by hand. The Jeep is back running now with a new exhaust and tune-up. I used it in the first big snowstorm of the 2005-06 season (6 inches) and it worked perfectly.

November, 2006 -- with a baby on the way and the Mercedes project taking up half the garage, the Jeep had to go. It was towed to my dad's house in Salem where it will be used and stored. The generator isn't functioning so it needs a jump start. Otherwise it runs perfectly and the brakes even have a firm pedal.

McLaren F1 #007 : The McLaren F1 was designed as the no-compromise sportscar. Every component in the car was optimised for the F1 with the intent to deliver driving enjoyment and speed at unmatched levels. When it debuted in 1992 it was a knockout punch to the supercar world. Sporting a BMW-designed and built V12 and very light and strong chassis the F1 quickly eclipsed all supercar standards of the day. Tailored around Gordon Murray's belief in the purest method of going fast and flying in the face of contemporary rivals and Formula One racecars, the F1 went without power steering, ABS-traction control, or even wings and spoilers. But since this was a streetcar, normal niceties like air conditioning, a 10-disc CD changer, and even fitted luggage came standard. Regular roadcars were priced at $1,000,000 apiece when new and McLaren outfitted each car to the owner's specific requests.

The F1 was raced at Le Mans and in the gentleman’s BPR endurance series in Europe and the FIA GT series throughout the 1990s. Some cars were still raced in the Japanese GT series as late as 2004. An F1 GTR won the 1995 24h of Le Mans as well as several sportscar championships during its career.

The last F1s were produced in 1997 and production fell short of the numbers McLaren had originally planned on. Over 70 roadcars were built over 3 model ranges: standard, LM, and GT. Poor timing was probably the root cause of the F1's demise: the poor economy in the early-1990s made a $1 million car hard to justify and Mercedes' involvement with McLaren in the later part of the decade created a conflict with the BMW-powered F1.

This car is number 007, produced in 1994. It is one of only three F1s finished in metallic black. It spent half of its life with UK owners before coming to the US where it now resides with its new owner and under the care of Turner Motorsport. It can be seen in regular use on the roadways around Boston.

McLaren F1 #073 (LM-spec) : Photos taken at SEMA 2006 in Las Vegas. This car was at the Michelin stand (but incorrectly labeled as an LM).

This is one of the very last F1 road cars built. It has been upgraded over the years and is one of only two standard F1s to receive a full LM power upgrade (691hp according to published sources). It also features the LM's front splitter and rear wing and is painted in a bright orange similar to the Historic Orange used on some of the genuine LM cars.

The interior is generally standard F1 with the addition of a GPS system and intercom system (strongly recommended with the LM exhaust). The materials for the seats and trim is an upgraded nubuck/suede leather.

Many F1 experts consider this to be the ultimate road-going F1. This car combines the Le Mans-winning components (aerodynamics, powertrain, etc) with the standard F1 creature comforts. Personally, I would do away with the GPS and the un-exciting multispoke wheels.

McLaren F1 LM : The McLaren F1 roadcar started life in 1994. By the end of the year, McLaren had been convinced to build racecars for wealthy customers who wanted to bring their McLarens to competition. At its first 24h of Le Mans showing in 1995, customer F1 GTRs finished 1-3-4-5-13 (and 1-2-3-4 in the GT category). A spectacular and crushing debut for the F1.

To celebrate the five finishing cars, McLaren Cars Ltd commissioned a run of five "LM" models (plus one prototype) for road use. The LM model would share the 6.1-liter engine (minus the racecar's inlet restrictors), gearbox components, aerodynamic package, and interior with the racer. However, the LM kept its 3-seat layout like the roadcar. Very litte was shared with the roadcar save for brakes, gas tank, and a few interior bits. Of the five LMs, three were finished in "Historic McLaren Orange" as a throwback to the company's history of sportscar success. Many people consider the McLaren F1 LM to be the world's ultimate roadcar. This is LM03. Please note that all photos are copyrighted and may not be used or copied without permission.

BMW M1 : A 1981 BMW M1. BMW produced just 455 total M1s between 1979-81 (399 road and 56 race). The project was almost lost several times as production delays, fuel shortages, and racing regulations threatened it. Originally conceived as a Porsche 911-killer, the M1 was delayed and by the time it was introduced it was uncompetitive in international racing. That didn't prevent some privateer teams from entering and winning the IMSA GTO Championship in 1981. The M1 was also used in its own spec series supporting F1 races in 1980-81. F1 drivers took the wheel against lucky privateers in a sprint race during European F1 weekends. This is a 1981 model and one of the last road cars produced (#408 of 455). For additional info on the M1, check out http://www.bmwm1.com/index.htm.
