Aluminum Overcast, Boeing B-17 Bomber
The Aluminum Overcast is owned by the Experimental Aircraft Association and flies around the country doing historical tours and presentations. On August 22, 2010 it was at the Lawrence Regional Airport in North Andover, MA.
The Aluminum Overcast was built in 1945 and delivered in May, too late to fly any missions for the Army Air Corps in World War II. In 1946 it was sold for $750 as Army surplus! Following the War it was used for cargo hauling and mapping projects. It was purchased by warbird enthusiasts in 1979 and donated to the EAA group shortly thereafter.
The bomber wears the colors and markings of the 398th Bomb Wing, which flew bombing missions over Nazi Europe.
