Beverly Airport
Beverly Airport is located north of Boston on the North Shore. It's a small, regional airport with two runways - 4755ft and 5001 ft. Around 100 aircraft are based here, mostly civilian single-engine planes and a corporate jets.
It was a staging airport for anti-submarine patrols during World War II and supported Coast Guard activity from nearby Salem Patrol Station.
Beverly was used for some of the earliest Sports Car Club of America races in 1955 and 1956. Airports were common race courses after World War II and before permanent tracks were established. Phil Hill (1961 Formula One World Champion) won in 1955 and Carroll Shelby (creator of the Shelby Cobra) won in 1956. Both were in the same Ferrari 335S.
Today, the airport operates relatively quietly. They host a few events each year, such as fundraising, car shows, and the Collings Foundation Wings of Freedom tour. There are a few permanent display items of interest: a Communist Chinese MiG-15 trainer, Air Force Grumman C-1 cargo plane, and a Army Bell UH-1 helicopter.
