Route 1 Cabins, Peabody, Mass
Abondoned cabin site along Route 1 North in Peabody, Mass.
These sit in a wooded area in Peabody. I don't know anything about the site or its history. The area around the site has not been developed (right nearby is a landfill) although Route 1 has long been developed. This could have been a set of cabins for travelers to rent on their way along Route 1. There are numerous motels along the way.
The exterior has a 'commercial' look to it with faux-stone siding. Each cabin had plumbing and electrical. The foundations were cement or cinder block and roofs were tar and shingle. Each of these indicates the cabins were from the 1950s-1960s. A front door opened on a small porch. Every roof was collapsed and two cabins showed fire damage.
At some point an off ramp leading from Route 128 to Route 1 was built and cut off the cabins from Route 1. This could have led to the site's closure and abandonment. The site was actually very clean and mostly free of vandalism and trash.
UPDATE: an article from the Salem Evening News appeared not long after I posted my photos. These were the Star Cabins, and are the last remaining Route 1 cabins that dotted the highway in the 1940s-1960s. Cabins led the way to motels and most of the cabins disappeared. Although if you head further south there are similar cabin-like motels in Saugus.
