Boxford Rail Trail

Boxford trail that runs from just West of I-95 to Georgetown. The Trail runs under power lines with a substation marking the southern entry point. The original East Boxford station is still there but is now a private home. There are a few road crossings that are quite busy with fast-moving traffic. Regrettably, one small section of the trail is private property and very obviously off-limits. This forces walkers and riders to leave the Rail Trail at Kelsey Road and walk through the Kelsey Arboretum. While the Arboretum seems quite lovely (likely more so in the Spring), making a detour off the Trail is unfortunate, selfish, and short sighted. The private land is only about 40-50 yards long and doesn’t appear to be used for anything. One highlight though, besides the Arboretum, is Hemlock Junction. This is a picnic and parking area where three major trails intersect. It looks like a great place to stop for a hiking or biking break with lots of shade and picnic tables.

  • Private, closed section of the Boxford Rail Trail. Look just beyond the top bar and that’s the end (Kelsey Road). Why?!? It’s such a short section.

  • Kelsey Arboretum. A pleasant place but also a strange detour off the Trail. The flora and fauna are protected by a long fence and multiple gates to keep deer out. It felt like being on the wrong side of the fence at the zoo.
