Putnamville Reservoir, Danvers
Putnamville is an area of Danvers that runs from Wenham on the North to Danvers High School at the South and Route 35 to the East and Route 1 to the West. A 312-acre lake sits in the middle and is used to supply Wenham Lake with drinking water for Beverly and Salem. Along the Northern edge is a decommissioned US Army Nike missile launching site.
This seems to be a popular hiking spot so I was disappointed when I found a weak trail system and quite a lot of trash. There was also a lot of fire pits, indicating homeless camps or youth parties. Signs indicate no kayaks or canoes yet nearly ever single lake-side home had them, so which is it? We need to take better care of these areas, especially as this is our drinking water!
It's also important to note: the trail is not complete around the entire lake! Along the Northern shore, where the new houses are on Bridle Spur Ln. and Lakeview Ave, there is no trail! This was most inconvenient when you have hiked the whole circumference of the lake only to have to break brush to make it up onto Bridle Spur.
It's not a bad place to walk or ride, but no one seems to be taking care of it. It's located in Danvers but leased to the Beverly-Salem Water Supply Board so someone needs to step up.
