East Point Coastal Defense area, Nahant, MA
From 1917 to 1962 East Point was a designated coastal defense zone with a large complement of armament and detection systems. Before and during World War II large anti-aircraft guns dotted the shoreline. Magnetic ship detection lines and sub-surface mines dotted the waters. There are concrete fire control towers, reinforced embankments, and other bunkered outputs are sprinkled around the area. After WWII the top of the hill was used as an anti-aircraft missile NIKE battery. Nahant's East Point was a critical part of Boston Harbor's defense.
