Feb 2013 Blizzard
For the week of February 4, meteorologists in Boston were predicting a mega-storm for the weekend. Snow totals ranged from 14" to 3 feet and 70mph winds over 36 hours. The storm was expected to stall over Boston and get heavier through Saturday morning. A dusting fell on Thursday night. Heavy snow and freezing rain fell throughout Friday.
The snow got heavier along Friday night with the wind almost constantly gusting and making large drifts. With the wind blowing around I thought we weren't getting much snow accumulation. But by 9:00a on Saturday there was at least 18" on the ground and the drifts had doubled in height. We can't get out the back door because the drift is so heavy there. I shouldn't have left the shovels back there...
Just the fallen snow was over the barrel of my snowblower (22") and the drifts were much higher. So clearing it was a back-and-forth ordeal that took twice as long as it should have. The snow was light enough that it cleared easily enough but the height of the drifts meant the snow didn't have a place to go. I left the rear of my driveway alone because there was no need to clear and the snow has no place to go...
By 4:00 on Saturday afternoon the wind had stopped and the snow was over. The sky even managed to brighten.
